Karen,

I just asked Dr. Steinberg at Stanford about this very subject. He told me that it would be safe to carry and deliver ONLY if the Moya Moya has been treated and the only successful treatment is surgery. Otherwise, there is a strong chance of stroke or brain bleed. I personally wouldn't risk it until after surgeries have provided good blood flow to the brain. I also happened to ask him what the chances would be that any baby I might have would end up with Moya Moya too. He said that there would be very little chance of that happening, in my case anyway, because there is no history in my family of MM.

If I were you (and I am in the same boat so I understand) I would first have the surgery (or surgeries if need be) and then have a baby. I wouldn't chance it. I have already had one side done and it's really not so bad- I promise! I've had dental work done that was more miserable than this brain surgery! Now that you have found all of us on this site, maybe you won't have so much fear and uncertainty about the surgery? Feel free to ask me any other questions you may have about the surgery or pregnancy and MM. Or you can always e-mail Dr. Steinberg with your questions too. He is very good about answering promptly and honestly.

Hope to talk to you more soon and keep me updated on what you decide!
Lisa
