Title: Superhuman : The Future of Medecine
Post by Steve_and_Sita on May 27th, 2004 at 3:35am
Whilst passing 15 minutes in an overseas hotel earlier this week I caught an extract from the programme "Superhuman : The Future of Medecine" narrated by Dr. Robert Winston on BBC Prime. Whilst this segment did not touch on Moya Moya it detailed the following case.

"Case Study: Charles Wilson had already had two heart bypass operations and was suffering up to 20 painful angina attacks each day. He was unable to perform the simplest physical activities. His doctors introduced him to an experimental form of gene therapy that prompts the body to grow new blood vessels to and from a diseased heart. They injected large amounts of the gene directly into his heart. Three months after the procedure, Charles was able to walk more than a mile a day and rarely experienced any angina attacks. Not everyone has had such success, but the treatment offers promise."

The thing that caught my attention was experimental gene therapy that enables the body to grow new blood vessels. This sounds like something that could in the future be potentially useful for us and our nearest and dearest. The programme made it clear it was highly experimental and high risk, (there was another patient who died immediately after surgery,) but there is hope for further development and maybe in 5-10 years time this is something that may be of use to the general public.

Just thought I'd post it to see if anyone had seen this programme, knew anything further, and simply for us as a group to keep an eye out for going forward.

Cheers
