Title: Info on  Stanford motels/Palo Alto
Post by Roni on May 26th, 2004 at 3:58pm
Hi Everyone,
We are goint to meet with Dr. Steinberg in a few weeks.  So far, plan to stay at either the Stanford Terrace Inn or Creekside Inn in Palo Alto.  Would appreciate any info on these two motels, or others, as well as the Marguerite shuttle, transportation and area  in general.  Since this is our first trip to Stanford - any info will be helpful.  Please email direct if you want, rather than clutter up the message board.  Email is Eolsen6400@aol.com.  Thanks in advance.
Best to all,
Roni

You'll be here for great weather, so bring warm-weather clothes . . . plus a sweater or light jacket for evenings, when it cools down.

Sorry I can't comment on the hotels, but if you like Indian food, I can recommend a place.  PM me if you want more info.

Roni,

I'm glad you put this question up here... I've been meaning to bring this up.

Normally, Dr. Steinberg's staff can get you some really good deals with hotels/motels close to the hospital.  Just ask and they can point you in a couple of directions.

However, if you don't meet the "requirements" for any of those deals (i.e. most of them are limited to a room for two people), I've worked a deal with a Comfort Inn about seven miles down the road from the hospital that I usually stay at.

Normally, it's $85 a night, but they offer anyone from this site a $68 rate.  I know it's not a HUGE difference, but every little bit helps.

If you (or anyone else) would like the info for the hotel, let me know and I will send you the info.  If nothing else, it's something to keep in mind if everything else falls through...

-DJ

Diane and DJ,
Thanks for your prompt replies and info.  Yes, Dr. Steinberg's office provided us with a list of motels/hotels that offer special medical rates.  Sunday, June 13, is graduation at Stanford, so things are pretty well booked.  Good to hear the weather should be nice as well.
Best,
Roni

I was going to tell you that it definitely won't rain while you're here, as our rain typically ends by April . . . but it just rained a few days ago, so . . . so much for that advice.

How about "I'm about 95% sure it won't rain while you're here"?

This area has lots of places to stay.  If you can't get booked in really close to Stanford, look in some of the nearby towns, such as Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Redwood City, etc.  Even San Jose isn't terribly far if you're driving.

Hi Diane,
Thanks for the prompt and encouraging San Jose weather report.  Would have emailed you directly, but haven't figured out how to use the new system yet.  Duh!

So far, I've booked us into the Stanford Terrace Inn - much more $$$ than we want/should spend, but need to have a place where it's easy to get back and forth to the med center.  STI has a free shuttle which will help.  Siri and her daughter both need additional testing, which will mean a bit of running back and forth.  It will also help to have a heated pool for the kids so they can frolic and forget about the tests for a few hours at a time.
Best,
Roni

We stayed at the Stanford Motor Inn...which was about 5-10 minutes away from Stanford, and they have rooms with kitchenettes in them...and we had 4 people in them most of the time....nice people that run it, and they offer good discounts as well, just mention that you are having surgery or tests done at Stanford and i think they will help you out.

Hillary

p.s.  We only payed 49.50 for a room with 2 beds in it, and it has a nice warm pool, and its quiet, with Boston Market and some other places close by....no shuttle, but easy to get to the hospital from there.

Hi Hillary,
Thanks for your post and helpful info.  Wanted to reply directly, but still haven't figured out how to navigate this board and access individual email addresses.

We are especially pleased and heartened to hear your precious Holly is doing so well.
Best,

Hillary or anybody- does the Stanford Motor Inn have suite rooms too?  Basically little apartments- a sep. bedroom and a sofa bed in a living room usually.  I like the idea of having a kitchenette because it saves some money on eating out all the time.

Or, does anybody know of any good places in the area with suites?  I did find a few in the San Jose, Redwood City and Palo Alto areas but the more affordable ones (I am NOT going to pay $250/day!) are already booked because of the Peterson murder trial.  I guess I picked the wrong dates to go!  May have to postpone this trip.

Thanks,
Lisa

The Stanford Motor Inn is where Tyler and I stayed on our second trip. I couldn't recall the name on my own. They were wonderful to Tyler and I. The rooms, with hospital discount, are rooms with a double bed, microwave and a fridge. They also have rooms that have 2 double beds, a stove, fridge, kitchen sink and table. This room cost more, but they were booked from graduation when we got there for our first trip and all I had was their name. They gave us a discount on the room, with just my word on why we were there, till the hospital found us a cheaper place.
They are WONDERFUL people.

P.S. When we were there they had a shuttle to and from the hospital at certain times, you just had to let them know the day before.

Lisa..

the rooms are on the small side, but the last one we had came with a kitchen instead of a kitchenette

It was comfortable enough for us though, but i'm not sure if they have suites...we just liked the price.

Lisa,
Try going to http://www.paloaltoonline.com/lodging

I was able to pull up a 10 page list of hotels/motels - most with information online.  Some just had phone numbers.  AAA has several lodgings listed in their Northern California book.  Graduation is June 13 - that's just about impossible to find in Palo Alto.  You can also check Menlo Park and Mountain View.
Good luck with the motel and, of course, with your visit to Dr. Steinberg.
Best,
Roni

Travelers!

Jack and I stay at the Stanford Arms motel (Menlo Park)  which is a funkie looking 1940 type place on El Camino Real very near Sand Hill Road (one of the main routs to the hospital). It's only a few minutes  away. The rooms are HUGE with kitchens, dinning areas, and lots of space. You don't feel like you're manouvering around a bed all the time. Last time we had a space with two 'bedrooms' which was wonderful. The price is fairly reasonable. The problem with it is that most of it is upstairs which can be a hassle ......   The other place we've stayed at is the Coronet on El Camino in Palo Alto. It's on ground level and has a pool. Close to California Ave whihc is a 'cute' shopping area to stroll along.

I grew up a few blocks from Calif. Ave so it's interesting going bacak there!
